FrontPage, the excellent online journal of David Horowitz, published an article today “SS Man of the Left” about Gunter Grass, a Nobel Prize-winning artist and intellectual.  Grass served in the 10th Panzer Division of the Waffen SS and for the last six decades Grass has maintained that he was not a true-believer in National Socialism and that he was rather swept along with so many other young men at the end of the Second World War.

Now Grass confesses (or brags?) that this fable of an innocent lamb in the clutches of the Third Reich was whole cloth – complete fabrication.  He was an enthusiastic Nazi.  He tried to join the Nazi U-Boat service, but rejected because he was too young.  Grass considered the SS the perfect career choice which he gladly followed. 

Over decades since the Second World War, Grass has been a far Leftist.  He admired Mao.  He admires Castro.  He opposed German reunification because he felt East Germany was a good society.  He hates, of course, America and has consistently opposed Americans efforts to fight communism or any other evil during the last half century. 

Gunter Grass (of course) loathes Christianity.  He regarded Konrad Adenaur,  the founder of the Christian Democrat Party and the principal principled opponent of Hitler during the Weimar Republic as a worse evil than Hitler.  He maligned Christianity in Germany, like any good Nazi or any good Marxophile. 

And, of course, Grass abhorred capitalism.  Hatred of capitalism or more accurately stated, freedom, is an uncompromising element of Nazism, Baathism and Marxism.  Grass also blames Jews and Israel for all the problems of the world not caused by America and Christians.

The article is wonderful and informative and true, except for one line which reveals how warped the Left has made even the thinking of clear thinking conservatives:  “At first blush, Grass’s conversion from SS man and Hitler admirer to leftist icon and relentless foe of capitalism, German bourgeois society and especially America may seem incongruous.”  No – it is utterly predictable that an SS man and Hitler admirer would be then and now a Leftist, or more accurately, a Sinisterist.

Nazis, Baathists, Bolsheviks, and all other vicious totalitarian regimes, whether we have been led to believe that one is on the nonexistent Far Right or whether it is on the very real Far Left are identical.  All believe in socialism.  All hate Christians.  All hate Jews.  All hate America.  All hate Israel.  They are all Sinisterists, obsessed exclusively with power and willing to lie (as Grass has done so well) or to murder (as Grass’s heroes like Hitler and Mao have done so well) for the sake of power.

The truly amazing thing is that serious conservative thinkers can still hold to the hoary and risible notion that a Left and Right exist, when Nazis and Fascists on the Far Right and Bolsheviks and Maoists on the Far Left.  My book, Sinisterism: Secular Religion of the Lie, points out that Fascists both began and ended as movements of the Far Left.  It describes the deep affinity that Nazis had for the Soviets and how that was reciprocated.

It quotes from many contemporary authors of the time that Nazis loathed Christianity at least as much as the Bolsheviks and that both monstrous regimes were anti-Semitic.  Gunter Grass has never changed what he believed at all.  He was an Waffen SS then and he is a Waffen SS now.  He was a Bolshevik then and he is a Bolshevik now.  He has never had a decent, conservative or religious thought in his life. 

Gunter Grass is like Osama bin Ladin who is like Kim Jong Il who is like Fidel Castro who is like Howard Dean who is like Syria’s Assad.  These men are not “Islamo-Fascists.”  Only bin Ladin even pretends to be a Moslem.  Assad belongs to an heretical sect long regarding as non-Islamic, and the other men are atheists.  These men are not Fascists; they love Nazis like Hitler and Soviets like Stalin much more than Fascists like Mussolini. 

They are pure Sinisterists, lovers of lies, haters of hope, kindred and malign spirits in a campaign to make the world miserable and enslaved to monsters.  Gunter Grass then is Gunter Grass now and is Gunter Grass forever:  a man – or once a man – who sold his soul to Sinisterism.
