A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House

Hillary Clinton went into her campaign with an "inevitabilty" theme being played. The Clintons are seasoned politicians and the road ahead must have seemed just about as favorable to her candidacy as it could get. But, a funny thing happened on that road, an unexpected bump that may derail her dreams of being the first female president.

At first glance the candidacy of Barack Obama must have seemed just another one to brush aside on the way to the big prize. However, Obama not only has proven he has staying power, he has shown a contrast in personalities, to the detriment of Hillary. He speaks of hope and change. Most people like him, even if they don’t share his political views. On the other hand, even some of the supporters of Hillary, who know her best, are bailing. It seems she does not have that likeability factor.

Now, Hillary is trying to assure voters that she had been “vetted” and they know just about everything about her and her husband. Older voters should. They were in the news so many times as their pasts were brought out, much like a thorn being removed, but too slowly at times to make an impression. To list the scandals and improprieties takes a lot of print. The Clintons would say that their enemies were very good at getting the word out, with Hillary referring to a “vast right-wing conspiracy”. This was on TV as she defended Bill against stories of his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Democrats have been playing the race and gender card so long that it must have come natural to do so again. However, these cards were now being played against their own. How confusing! Do they vote for a woman just because she is a woman, or do they vote for a black just because he is black? Oh, the dilemma. Oh, the irony.

Hillary tried to meet her opposition head-on and for a time she and Obama argued back and forth about their claims of who deserved the vote of blacks in this country. How galling this must have been to Hillary, as she and husband Bill had courted this voting bloc, perhaps more than any other. Bill was even called “the first black president” for his efforts. Being the wife of the first black president was trumped by being an actual black contender for the presidency. Hillary and Obama declared a truce on this. Hillary had little choice. After all, he was the candidate with the dark skin.

Both Hillary and Obama have made strong claims that they should be elected to further the causes of blacks and women. Being the “first” anything is supposed to appeal to voters. While litmus tests have been disdained by the Democrat party, these are nothing but litmus tests. If you are a woman, you need to vote for Hillary. If you are black, you need to vote for Obama. So far, this test seems to be in play, although there are stories of women swooning over Obama as he speaks. No reports yet of men fainting while listening to Hillary speak.

Although short on specifics, both Hillary and Obama adopted the slogan of “change”. Bill Clinton admonished us in song, when he was running for office, “don’t stop thinking about tomorrow”. That tomorrow is long past. Hillary is now viewed, politically, as part of that past. Obama is the one who can lay claim to being for “change”.

Hillary the Chameleon sent out mixed messages for a long time. First, she was a victim of the big boys who didn’t want to let her play in their sandbox. Husband Bill came gallantly to her defense. On the other hand, she talked tough about her ability to be a strong commander-in-chief, even though she was a woman. Then she took to tugging at the heartstrings by crying at strategic times. There was much speculation about her sincerity in turning on the tears. After observing the Clinton “two-fer” for many years, my guess is that the tears were used to get sympathy and turn out the female vote Maybe this was her way of showing her feminine side. There were some women who did not like being represented by a weeping Hillary, since a lot of them had far more daunting problems than being dissed by male politicians and not getting their way. Most did not have an extra five million dollars hanging around to put into a political campaign, as Hillary said she did. When asked where she got the money, she replied it was her own money.

Now, if the “mainstream media” had any indepth reporters, there would be some questions raised about her sources of campaign contributions. The government ethics (an oxymoron?) groups have been mostly quiet about Hillary’s contributors. It has been left up to groups such as Judicial Watch to investigate the Clintons, now especially Hillary. In its latest newsletter it reports on its efforts to get records from the National Archives pertaining to the former First Lady’s time in the White House. These include her “calendar, daily office diary, schedule, day planner, telephone log book and chronological file.”

According to Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton:

“There is no question Judicial Watch’s lawsuit pressured the National Archives to take action on these records………..

Archivists had previously stated their intention to take an indefinite period of time to process and review the records. Now, the ball is in Bill Clinton’s court”.

Since the “court” includes the two-fer playing duo of Bill and Hillary, that means Hillary’s activities while in the White House will also be on display.

Republicans could be taking some satisfaction in the apparent demise of Hillary as candidate, but those who should know are saying that Obama is even more a socialist than Hillary. The only plus would be that, even with all the experienced staff around her, Hillary’s “Inevitability Train” seems to be off the tracks. It will take some time for Republicans to investigate Obama’s past and current affiliations, especially contributors to his campaign.

Judicial Watch, while doing valuable work, is not the only entity doing investigations and making information public. The internet is fast becoming “the” place to get all the news the MSM did not see fit to print.
