Huckabee on a Roll

Dr. James Dobson, the influential evangelical leader and host of "Focus on the Family" has endorsed Mike Huckabee in his race for the presidency, according to the Associated Press. Last November Dr. Donald Wildmon, founder of the 3-million member American Family Association endorsed Huckabee.

Dr. Dobson's endorsement is a major boost for Mike Huckabee, who trails John McCain in the number of delegates pledged to his candidacy. The endorsement comes in the wake of two significant primary victories for Huckabee in Kansas and Louisiana. Huckabee crushed McCain in Kansas with 60 per cent of the vote -- more than double the number of voters who supported McCain. And McCain only beat Huckabee in Washington State by a very thin margin. With Romney out of the race the tide could definitely be turning in Huckabee's favor.

This is the first time Dr. Dobson has ever endorsed a candidate during the primary season. In his statement, he said, "I am endorsing Gov. Mike Huckabee for President of the United States today. My decision comes in the wake of my statement on Super Tuesday that I could not vote for Sen. John McCain, even if he goes on to win the Republican nomination. His record on the institution of the family and other conservative issues makes his candidacy a matter of conscience and concern for me...

"The remaining candidate for whom I could vote is Gov. Huckabee. His unwavering positions on the social issues, notably the institution of marriage, the importance of faith and the sanctity of human life, resonate deeply with me and with many others. That is why I will support Gov. Huckabee through the remaining primaries, and will vote for him in the general election if he should get the nomination. Obviously, the governor faces an uphill struggle, given the delegates already committed to Sen. McCain. Nevertheless, I believe he is our best remaining choice for President of the United States."

You have to respect a man who is motivated by principle rather than politics. Dr. Dobson has been an advisor to several presidents, and has spent more time in the White House than many members of Congress. If McCain becomes president, after this endorsement he will probably not invite Dr. Dobson to stop by for tea. Dobson obviously doesn't care.

More important, the good doctor is not concerned about "electability." The media has convinced much of America that McCain is the only one who can win in a general election. That frightens many conservatives, who see the possibility of Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barrack Hussein Obama winning as the equivalent of Satan himself sitting in the Oval Office. I can't tell you how many people have spoken to me or sent emails saying, "I'd rather see a liberal Republican like McCain win than either of those two."

Some conservatives, though, feel there wouldn't be that much difference between McCain and either of the Democrats. They point to the time when McCain stated that he would "entertain" the idea of running as number two on Ultra-Liberal John Kerry's ticket. CBS News reported (see LINK below):

"McCain said in a television interview that he would consider the unorthodox step of running for vice president on the Democratic ticket -- in the unlikely event he received such an offer from the presidential candidate.

"'John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years', McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. 'Obviously I would entertain it.'"

The big question is why is the left-wing media trying so hard to convince Republicans that McCain is their only shot? It's not just the TV stations. The New York Times recently endorsed McCain, and he has been bragging about that. A real Republican running for president would consider an endorsement from the Times a curse, and would do everything he could to distance himself from it.

I think the answer is that the reason the media is pushing McCain is that they think he would be the easiest candidate for their preferred nominee -- whichever liberal Democrat it might be -- to beat in the general election. The Times has endorsed McCain for the Republican nomination and Hillary for the Democrat nomination. Guess who they will support in the general election?

McCain votes with the Democrats on important issues more than he does with the Republicans. He has partnered with some of the vilest Democrats in Washington to push through legislation that hurt America and helps the Democrats (McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy). So it is no wonder that conservatives are suspicious of him.

A March, 2005 Wall Street Journal article (see LINK below) blasted McCain-Feingold because it gives the FEC (Federal Election Commission) the power to censor individual citizens who exercise their First Amendment rights on news websites and blogs. "Since 2003, when the Supreme Court upheld it, McCain-Feingold has failed spectacularly in its stated goal of reining in fat-cat donors. Yet its uncompromising language has helped to gag practically every other politically active entity - from advocacy groups to labor unions. Now the FEC is being asked to censor another segment of society, the millions of individuals who engage in political activity online."

McCain-Kennedy is a horrible immigration bills that makes liberals everywhere jump for joy. According to experts (see LINK below) it:

  • Grants amnesty to illegal aliens,
  • Fails to provide the infrastructure to properly implement a guest worker program,
  • Does not ensure internal enforcement of immigration laws,
  • Does not engage the cooperation of states in Latin America, and
  • Fails to articulate an effective border control strategy.
So what does Huckabee have that McCain lacks? He is clear as crystal on the issues that are important to Conservatives, and, in truth, to all real Americans.

In the December article in which I originally endorsed Mike Huckabee, I quoted his own words from his website on these important issues. I repeat them here, because if you want to really know a man, you need to hear what he says about his beliefs and intentions, rather than what others say about him.

SANCTITY OF LIFE: I support and have always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. My convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering. I believe that Roe v. Wade should be over-turned.

MARRIAGE: I support and have always supported passage of a federal constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. As President, I will fight for passage of this amendment. My personal belief is that marriage is between one man and one woman, for life.

IMMIGRATION: Securing our borders must be our top priority and has reached the level of a national emergency. I oppose and will never allow amnesty.

TAXES: I'd like you to join me at the best "Going Out of Business" sale I can imagine - one held by the Internal Revenue Service. Am I running for president to shut down the federal government? Not exactly. But I am running to completely eliminate all federal income and payroll taxes.

FAITH AND POLITICS: The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred. We should not banish religion from the public square, but should guarantee access to all voices and views. We should share and debate our faith, but never seek to impose it. My faith is my life - it defines me. My faith doesn't influence my decisions, it drives them. For example, when it comes to the environment, I believe in being a good steward of the earth. I don't separate my faith from my personal and professional lives.

HEALTH CARE: The health care system in this country is irrevocably broken, in part because it is only a "health care" system, not a "health" system. We don't need universal health care mandated by federal edict or funded through ever-higher taxes. We do need to get serious about preventive health care.

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE: The first thing I will do as President is send Congress my comprehensive plan for energy independence. We will achieve energy independence by the end of my second term.

NATIONAL SECURITY: I believe that we are currently engaged in a world war. Radical Islamic fascists have declared war on our country and our way of life. They have sworn to annihilate each of us who believe in a free society, all in the name of a perversion of religion and an impersonal godI will fight the war on terror with the intensity and single-mindedness that it deserves.

IRAQ: Iraq is a battle in our generational, ideological war on terror. General Petraeus and our troops are giving their all to provide a window of opportunity for the Iraq government to succeed, while the Democrats are running for the exit doors.

ISRAEL: I salute and support Israel as our staunch ally in the War on Terror and our greatest friend in that regionIsrael is an important partner in the spread of freedom and democracy throughout the Middle East and the worldThe United States must remain true to its long-standing commitment to the Israeli people.

THE SECURE AMERICA PLAN: A 9-Point Strategy for Immigration Enforcement and Border Security. I will implement a broad-based strategy that commits the resources of the federal government to the enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population.

I voted for Mike Huckabee in the Florida primary. I hope to have the opportunity to vote for this good, honest man in the general election.
