A bee in their bonnet - Anti-pesticide activists falsely blame new pesticides for bee colony problems (May 21, 2013)
Anti-pesticide activists are at it again. Forty-plus years ago, their target was DDT – and their successful campaign to get this long-lasting spatial repellant and insecticide banned resulted in millions of parents and children dying needlessly from malaria. This time they’ve got a bee in their bonnet. This time their target is a new class of safe pesticides called neonicotinoids (because they are derived from nicotine). Their campaign strategy revolves around the claim that the pesticides are causing “colony collapse disorder” (CCD), a very real problem that’s adversely affecting bee populations in many countries. Not surprisingly, the pressure groups are demanding that neonics be banned immediately, long before scientists can determine what’s really causing CCD and how to address the problem. If the radicals win, the result will likely be as devastating for bees and agriculture as the DDT ban has been for African families.
